Just over Tuscany's southern border, in Lazio, I Gigli del Belvedere is set on a hilltop close to the pretty medieval town of Montefiascone and commands extensive views over nearby Bolsena lake to a line of blue hills on its far side. One of a small group of villas that can happily absorb parties of up to 16 people, it does so particularly flexibly - there are eight bedrooms split over three separate apartments, one on each floor of the villa, linked by an internal staircase.
Each apartment has a private terrace, furnished with tables and chairs for al-fresco dining, but the largest of these, on the ground floor, has ample room for your whole party to eat together. The generous terrace to the side of the private pool, just beneath the villa, is sure to be a favourite gathering place for everyone (and kids of all ages will love the Jacuzzi section). But, come the end of the day, we think you'll head to the furnished terrace on the roof of the villa for your sundowner. And when you wish to get out and about, nearby Viterbo and Orvieto, both with fascinating histories, make great day trips.

This well-maintained and superbly organised villa is ideal for larger groups of family or friends who want to holiday together and enjoy a private pool while also maintaining some independence. Located close to the borders of Tuscany, Lazio and Umbria, you can sample something of each of these regions, depending which direction you travel in. A day trip to Rome is even an easy option. But if you want to stay local, you'll find a cathedral as well as a selection of bars and restaurants at Montefiascone, only a stone's throw away.
